CAPE COAST MCE, GHANA OPTOMETRIC ASSOCIATION AND UCC OPTOMETRY SCHOOL TEAM UP FOR EYE SCREENING ACROSS THE MUNICIPALITY

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Cape Coast, Hon. George Justice Arthur, has partnered the Ghana Optometric Association (GOA) and the School of Optometry and Vision Science (SOVS) at the University of Cape Coast to undertake eye screening in schools and communities across the municipality.

The MCE announced his support at the opening ceremony of the GOA’s Annual General Meeting in Cape Coast on October 22, 2026. The meeting was held under the theme “Visionary Leadership: Optometry as an Essential Pillar of Primary Eye Care in Ghana.”

A model for the rest of the country

GOA President Dr. Alfred Gardemor commended the initiative and its partners for collaborating with the association to screen pupils in schools and communities. “This is something that we wish is replicated across the country,” he said. “This is something that we should all embrace. We should all be happy about this starting in the Central Region,” he added.

Deprived areas first

Dr. Gardemor said the association will push for the Cape Coast model to reach every region, with priority on underserved communities. “Those areas do not have the advantages the city dwellers often have… they are often neglected,” he said. “We are going to target those communities.” He said the association will advocate for these areas to be supported, so that optometrists can go in and provide their services there.
