Ghana Optometric Association Highlights Optometrists’ Role in Advancing Eye Care in Ghana

Accra, Ghana – March 2026. The Ghana Optometric Association (GOA) joins the global community to commemorate World Optometry Week (March 23–28, 2026) and World Optometry Day on March 23, under the theme: “A Shared Vision: Collaboration in Global Eye Care.”

This year’s theme underscores the importance of partnerships in strengthening eye health systems. Optometrists are independent primary healthcare practitioners of the eye and visual system, providing comprehensive eye and vision care. Across Ghana, optometrists serve in hospitals, clinics, the security services (military, police, and prisons), and academia, expanding access to eye care services and contributing significantly to the prevention of avoidable blindness and visual impairment. The services of Ghanaian optometrists extend beyond Ghana to other African countries, Europe, Asia and Americas.

The profession is at the forefront of tackling refractive error, the leading cause of severe visual impairment in Ghana, while also playing a critical role in the management of eye diseases, including cataract and glaucoma. Optometrists contribute through public education, community screening, early detection, and the ongoing management of individuals affected by these conditions.

The profession has also driven innovation within the eye care sector, including the establishment of the Eye and Vision Research Centre at the School of Optometry and Vision Science at the University of Cape Coast, as well as a tertiary-level low vision centre at the Department of Optometry at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

Ghanaian optometrists continue to contribute to research that informs clinical practice and public health strategies, while academic institutions remain pivotal in training highly skilled professionals. At the policy level, optometrists are actively supporting efforts to strengthen eye health systems and promote equitable access to care nationwide.

As we celebrate World Optometry Week, we recognize that no single profession can address Ghana’s growing vision and eye health needs alone. Collaboration across all levels of care is essential, and our clients, patients, and the public must remain at the centre of eye care delivery.

The Association encourages the public to consult qualified eye care professionals whenever they experience changes in vision and to make routine eye examinations an essential part of their overall healthcare.

Protect your sight. Get your eyes checked. Visit an optometrist.
